Copenhagen, Denmark

We only had 36 hours in Copenhagen, and it was raining!  It is such a beautiful city and I cannot wait to get back and spend more time there.  First thing we had to do was go buy some warm clothes.  I brought a sweatshirt thinking it would be fine but I was definitely wrong.  H & M to the rescue!  After we all bundled up in jackets, gloves and hats it was time to check out the Rosenborg Castle.

Christian IV thought that the old Copenhagen castle was to medieval and wanted a residence that was more up to date.  Therefore Rosenborg was built.  In 1606 he bought 40 lots to build his residence and have space for a beautiful garden.
The castle began as his small summer palace, but over the course of 28 years it went through four stages of development, and was completed in 1633. Rosenborg was Christian IV’s favorite palace.  He loved it so much that when he was dying he asked to be transported there.  He passed away in his bed chamber.

That evening we headed to Nyhavn for dinner.  It is one of the most beautiful places I have seen and looked like it was straight out of a movie.  I tried to get there before the sun went down but the walk was longer then expected.  We arrived right when the sun was setting and it was amazing.

All the restaurants have outside seating.  The girls thought it was very cute that they all provide blankets on the seats, so even though it was very cold, we decided to eat outside.

We are driving up to Oslo, Norway via Sweden.  On the way we decided to stop at Kronberg castle in Helsingor, Denmark.  This castle dates back to the 1420’s.  In 1629 a fire destroyed much of the castle, but King Christian IV rebuilt it. In 1785 the castle stopped being a royal residence and was converted into barracks for the army. The army left the castle in 1923, and after a thorough renovation it was opened to the public.  This is a must do if you are in Copenhagen.  It is about a 45 minute drive and definitely worth it!

I really wish we had more time in Denmark.  Copenhagen is a beautiful city with a lot to do.  It is definitely on my list to come back and spend more time.

Farvel, Denmark!

Next stop, Oslo, Norway!
